No-Name Peak 28/1/12 + FUNBE Waves 28/1/12

Back to No-Name Peak with MHM on Saturday morning after another night in the car... Chilly. First on the mountain though at about 8:40am, except it was COLD today. Windy too. Just hard to get started... but we did... Didn`t go all the way to the top today, as the last ridge (about twenty minutes of hiking) looked a little gnarly. So after an hour or so we strapped in to ride, and it was a pretty sweet ride too - the powder was NICE.

After lunch at Oakway again, we headed home and went straight out to hit the surf. Well I did anyway, snowboarding was enough for MHM and she was happy to just take photos from the car. The waves were pretty sweet though, and it was just me out there as well. Gotta love winter surfing in Hokkaido. Of course, being able to surf and snowboard in the same day is even better!

車泊してから土曜日に又MHMとNO-NAME PEAKに行きました。でも風もあって結構寒かったです。8時40分に開始して１時間ぐらい登りました。最後の尾根は風が強そうだったので上までは行かなかったです。殆ど頂上だったので仕方がないですね。パウダーは勿論良くて滑りは最高でした。バックカントリー大好きです！

又OAKWAYで昼食を食べてから、帰って来て波チェックしました。MHMもうやる気がなくて私だけ入りました。というか貸切でした。北海道の冬サーフィンはいいですね。勿論同じ日にスノーボードとサーフィンが出来て良かったです！

Winter Resolutions 7/20

Went and checked out OSANAI in OBIHIRO on Friday night for the first time. Interesting place... It has a reputation for really good yakitori (skewered chicken), but you can only order food once, which is a little unusual for Japanese-style restaurants. MHM also heard rumours the master would scold you if you wasted food or didn`t order enough drinks... Maybe because of this, despite being a Friday night, we were the only customers! My main impression was that it was pretty old-school. There were no soft drinks on the menu, only alcohol or iced tea, and there was nothing but chicken to eat. It seemed a slightly better idea to go there just for a drink, rather than for dinner - we kinda had a chicken overload. The servings were really big too. AND, being our first time, we ordered too much! Will probably go back, maybe not straightaway though...

Back to No-Name Peak on Saturday with MHM after sleeping in the car Friday night. Started the hike at 8:40 and got up top about 10:00AM. The sky was grey, but there was no wind and it wasn`t that cold either. Not much new snow recently, so the hike was easy and there was also a nice snowshoe trail still intact to cruise up. At the same time, the sun came out just as we were strapping in to ride and we still got untouched powder all the way down. Couldn`t get crazy sprays, but it was still really fun!

金曜日の晩に車伯してから土曜日に又NO-NAME PEAKに登りました。8時40分に始めて頂上まで1時間２０分ぐらいかかりました。天気は曇っていたけど風がなくてあまり寒くなかったです。実は滑る準備してた時晴れてきました！最近雪があまり降ってないみたいだったけど、それでもパウダーで楽しく滑りました！土曜日の晩新年会があったので、1回やって終わりました。来週末も楽しみです！

We went and tried out BRONCO in Obihiro on Friday night, except...
it was a little average.
Oh well.

After dinner at BRONCO we checked out MANIAC,
which was a bar just down the road.
We were the only people there at the time,
but it looked like it would have a pretty good atmosphere.

We went to the OAKWAY INN in Mikage for lunch on Saturday.
Now this place was GOOD.
Definitely going back...
Probably next Saturday for lunch actually...

No-Name Peak 8/1/12

Out to No-Name Peak with MHM today for our first backcountry hike of the season, and it was BLUEBIRD. Clear skies, no wind and it wasn`t even that cold - the snow was pretty good too! It took us one hour twenty to reach the top, and fortunately there was a nice trail still intact from the day before, so the hike wasn`t too bad. Seeing as I almost never climb mountains in the summer, I felt pretty good after such a long break, even with the heavy pack and board strapped to my back. I was also pretty happy with the snowboarding, as the ride down was... well... AWESOME... The powder was UNREAL!

日曜日にNO-NAME PEAKで今シーズンの初バックカントリーでした。ハイクは1時間20分だけど、滑りは。。。もっと早かったです（笑）天気と雪が最高なので山にいれて凄く気持ち良かったです。やっぱり北海道大好きです！

First day of the season! The snow was good from top to bottom - stashes of POW everywhere too. NICE. Only the Furano Zone was operating, so looking forward to hitting the Kitanomine Zone sometime soon. Good first session.

I found I haven`t really been trying out new places much recently, so I want to try and go to 20 new places from the beginning of December to the end of April (Golden Week) - restaurants, hot springs, ski resorts, mountains, whatever... Should be interesting.

12月の頭から来年のGWまで20個の新しい場所に挑戦しょうと思います。レストランや温泉やスキー場や山でもいいです。まあ、新しい場所だったら、どこでもいいですよ。タノシミでーす。

最後に又カリフォルニア州に戻りました。メインはサンタ・クルーズ市だけど、オークランド市とロス・アルトス市にも親戚がいるので訪問しました。

After Texas it was back to California, again mainly based in Santa Cruuuuuz, although we did stay with relations in Oakland and in Los Altos as well.

それからお父さんの出身のテキサス州にヒューストン市に行きました。ヒューストン市の人口は2,100,000人でアメリカで４番目に人口の多い都会です。テキサス州の夏は勿論暑くて７月の温度は毎日30℃を超えています。でも逆に室内はどこもエアコンが効きすぎていて冷えます。健康的に悪いだけじゃなく、あまりエコじゃないから意味が分かりませんでした。。。楽しかったけど、今度は春に行こうかな！！！

Then we headed to Houston, Texas and the surrounding area for two weeks. Good times... but really really hot in summer!

夏休みにアメリカのカリフォルニア州とテキサス州に行って来ました。お父さんはテキサス出身なので、アメリカに親戚が多いです。最初に友達が住んでいるカリフォルニア州のサンタ・クルーズ市でに行きました。人口は６０，０００人ぐらいでサン・フランシスコから１１５キロ南にあるサーファーの町です。結構過ごしやすい町だけど、夏でも朝晩はちょっと寒かったです。昼は暖かいけど、やっぱり一年中サーファーはウエットスーツが必要です。

We had a few days to start our trip in Santa Cruz, California. Always a good time!

今日は結構楽しかったです！入ったら波が綺麗になったからです。1時間ぐらいサーフィンして、それから最近買ったばっかりのビデオ・カメラの初体験しました。やり方まだあまり分からないけど面白そうですよ！
Not a bad session. The waves cleaned up after I got in and turned out quite nice. Surfed for about an hour or so, then got out and tried the new video camera for a while. Haven't got it totally worked out, but it should be fun to use.

This. Is. CRAZY!!!

今年一月のハワイJAWSでのMARK VISSERというプロ・サーファーが夜中にビッグ・ウェーブ・サーフィンやっています。シンジラレナイ！！！

最近私が作ったハワイ系チキンカツとグレイビー・ソースです。成功でした。

Had to make it again the other day... and it was GOOD.

このパスタ・ディッシュを作っている最中に電話が来ました。。。

While in the middle of making this, the phone rang...

それから飲み会になりました。楽しかったです！
作ったディッシュは次の日でも美味しかったよ！

...and the night turned into this.
No big deal, it was still good the next day!

３月１１日に北海道から大阪市まで飛びました。東日本大震災と同じ日でした。でも大阪市は仙台市から結構遠いので、私達は大丈夫でした。あまり旅行する気分ではなかったけど、せっかく行ったので観光しました。一日目はジャック・ジョンソンのコンサートのため大阪市にいました。それから土曜日に京都市に行きました。三日目には彦根市に行って、それから最後の日は又京都市でした。まあ、楽しかったけど。。。

Well, great timing for a trip down south to Honshu. We arrived in Osaka on March 11th, which was the same day as the big earthquake/tsunami in Sendai. Fortunately we were actually quite far away, and weren`t affected by it. We did feel it though... But without really knowing the extent of what happened until we got back (we had very little internet access) we spent a day in Osaka, seeing Jack Johnson play that night, a day in Kyoto, a day in Hikone near Lake Biwa-ko, and then another day in Kyoto. The weather was nice, and we saw some interesting things - it was good...

先週末MHMは毎年行っている雪崩講習会を受けたので、別行動をしました。でも２週間前のスノーボードの怪我はまだまだ治ってないので、私は何もしなかったです。サーフィンやスノーボード、柔道や剣道、何も出来ません。辛いです！まあ、もうそろそろ治るかな。。。

MHM went to her annual avalanche training course this past weekend, so it was just me on my own in town. Not much went on either...

又白銀台のパーク・セッション。でも２本目にボックスでいい技が出来てそれから調子に乗って3本目に酷く転びました！その後テンションが落ちてすぐ帰りました。。。

又MHMと白銀台のパーク・セッションをやりました。新雪もあって。でも晴れたのに、風が結構強くてちょっと堅い場所がありました。まあ、楽しかったけど！
Another session lapping the park at Hakugindai with MHM. Fresh snow too. However although it was sunny, there was quite a strong wind, which made for some icy patches. Fun time though.

１時間ぐらい入りました。今回MHMはパスしたけど。今日の波はちょっとサイズがありました。最初から調子が良かったけど、だんだん駄目になってきました！やっぱり同じ日にスノーボードはいいけど、クタクタになってシマイマス。頑張らないと！
Out for another surf session, this time with MHM on the shore. The waves had a bit more size today, but staying in position was a little tedious. Surfed for about an hour. Felt good at first, but started to fade near the end - always tends to happen if you try to surf and snowboard in the same day, I guess... Just gotta try harder!

朝一にMHMとスノーボードのため白銀台スキー場に行きました。小さいスキー場なのにパークが凄く面白いです。特に沢山ボックスがありました。パーク結構ブランクあるので、これから頑張りまーす！
Got out here with MHM for a morning session, as I wanted to try out their park. Can`t believe a tiny ski hill far away from any real snow has such a good one. Nothing high level, but just really fun. Six boxes in total (five of which you can hit in any one run), a set of kickers and a drum can. Nice.

最近波が全然ないけど、今日ちょっとありました。まあ、大した事がないけど！それでも４時ぐらいからMHMと５０分間入りました。同じ日にスノーボードとサーフィンが出来て最高です！！！
The waves weren`t really up to much, but seeing as there haven`t been much of anything lately, MHM and I were keen to get wet. Only in for 50 minutes, and it seemed like MHM got all the good waves. Oh well, snowboarding and surfing in the same day is ALWAYS good!

中学校のスキー学習のため白銀台スキー場に行きました。天気が良くて楽しかったです。スラローム・コースを滑って結構練習になりました。又やらないと！！！
Out here for the ski day for one of my junior high schools. The weather was sunny and there was hardly any wind. Fun day. Even got on the slalom course at the end. This could really improve my skiing. Gotta do it more.

ここにMHMと来てスゴク天気が良かったです！峠なのに風が全然なかったです。結構寒いけど。。。ハイクして上まで１時間４０分かかりました。雪はそんなに深くないけど、パウダーはナイスでした。あまりに楽しかったのでもう１回登り返しました！２回目は森の上までだけでした。３５分で。滑りも楽しかったです。

Out with MHM to hit this mountain for the first time this season. The weather was nice - cold, but no wind. We didn`t have to break trail either, and the hike to the top took 1 hour 40. The snow wasn`t deep, but the powder was still pretty rippable... which meant we had to hike again. Just to the treeline though, which only took 35 minutes for a nice second run. A good day in the mountains.

Was planning on going to Tomamu today, but after a night on the town on Friday, I decided to go somewhere a little cheaper on Saturday afternoon. Feeling kinda tired after all! Was my first time to ski here, as this place is pretty small (only a couple of lifts) and doesn`t generally get a lot of snow. Had a fun time on my own though.

日曜日にやっとバックカントリーをやりました。普通シーズン・インからすぐハイクするけど、今年は雪が少なくてリソートばっかりでした。でも今日MHMと山に行ってみました！ハイクは久しぶりだからちょっと大変だけど,１時間４０分で頂上に着きました。曇っていたけど、風がなくてあまり寒くなかったです。だからハイクは大丈夫でした。滑りも最高！クタクタだから今日のハイクは一回だけでした。又今度もちょっと攻めまーす。

The weather was decent,
and there was not much wind at all.
However on the last stretch the hike got tough,
as we were slipping in the snow a bit.
Pretty happy to get past that.

It took 1 hour 40 to get to the top.
Just the one climb today though
as we were kinda tired first up.
Oh... and the ride down was pretty SWEET.

Nothing better than a CLASSIC to finish off the day...

２０１０年の目標は５２の新しい料理を作って５２冊の本を読むことでした。料理は２９まで、本は１９まで出来ました。目標まで出来なかったけど、いい経験でした。

29 new dishes in 2010 (after making 47 in 2009). Although my goal was to make them all from scratch, after I discovered the foreign foods store in Asahikawa City, how could I not try all the sauces and seasonings they had there?!

As for books, I only made it to 19 (after reading 43 in 2008). Basically I ran out of books to read, and the English section of the Obihiro City Library isn`t really up to much!

初滑りです！サーフィンと合わせて、２０１１年にグーフィー・スタンスで滑ります。最初からちょっと怖かったけど、だんだん慣れてきました。富良野ゾーンで滑って雪が良かったです！

First day out for the season with MHM. Better late than never. As with the surfing, I am riding goofy for 2011. A little weird at first, but got back into it okay. AND... the snow was GOOD.

今日のゲレンデ・コンディションはとても硬いです。

BULLET-PROOFというのは直訳すると弾丸を通さないほど硬いという意味があります。スノーボーダーはとても硬いゲレンデのことをBULLET-PROOFと言います。

金曜日の晩にTWO FACE FACTORYの忘宴会はシュさんの家でありました。肉が多くて、ビールの樽もありました！天国だった！！！

普通はスパルタ教育専門だけど、カメラのため優しい真似をしました（笑）

先週研修会のため久しぶりに札幌に行って来ました。忙しかったけど、ゆっくり食べる時間がありました☆

Just went to Sapporo for a conference. Hit most of my favourite restaurants and stocked up on SPAM - quite possibly the world`s most perfect "MEAT".

やっぱりTAJ MAHALに行ったよ。

又COSTCOに行って沢山SPAMを買いました。
SPAM本当に完璧な「肉」だよ。
