New Years Break

Rolled into the KD carpark with MH at 3:30AM late Friday night and woke up a few hours later on Saturday the 29th to strong winds and no action on the gondola... Pippu was the closest possible option, so we headed there for a couple of hours instead. First time at Pippu in FOREVER and it was totally fun - mainly because I was on skis and it was all new and fresh again. Starting to feel confident too...

New Years Eve it was out to KD with MH for the 9am gondola. Half the course hadn`t been groomed, so we took a run before getting into the hike. The weather, however, was deceptive. It appeared to be sunny with little wind, but the clouds and wind gusts came and went unfortunately. Took 50 minutes to get to the cornice breaking trail all the way, and with the stability confirmed, we strapped in to ride. The pow was deep, but there was a hard layer underneath from the recent stormy weather, which made the riding a little hairy. It also convinced us not to hike again...

New Years Day it was out with MH to meet the Alaskan ManBeast at Kamui for an afternoon session. First time here for the season and it had dumped pretty hard the night before, so it was a pretty good time. On the skis today, and the powder was challenging, but I came through it okay.

Wednesday the 2nd it was back to KD for another shot at the summit. Unfortunately the weather wasn`t going to let us, and we hit the cornice in 53 minutes before deciding to turn back. Pretty gnarly winds. The snow conditions were the same as the 31st as well - deep, but with a hard layer underneath. Just the one hike, not surprisingly...

Photo - I don`t actually live that close to the snow, but when it does snow down here, it really PUKES. This all happened over the 29th, and I had to deal with it when I got back.
